CHAPTER TWENTY

Bells

Positioned near the far end of the chamber, Nikolean stood facing the dais along the back wall, holding a military stance while waiting for Lord Brilldessah to arrive. Like nearly every building or dwelling of the dark elves, the room was dimly lit, emitting the same somber effect which they tended to prefer. There were posh seating arrangements covered in furs against gray lava-rock walls on either side. A large chandelier with black diamonds and rib bones from two-leggeds hung morbidly between himself and the lord’s decorated chair with its rich purple fabrics. He noticed that the whole room had been decorated elaborately, much more so than by the lord he had served before departing, flaunting a general guise of opulence.

When he heard the heavy chamber door jolt open, he maintained his statuesque stance, staring forward, as was customary. He listened intently to the many footsteps entering the room behind him, counting ten soldiers and a female with boots that clicked and clacked from spurs with every step, assuming that to be Lord Brilldressah. As the soldiers passed by and took their places on either side of the hall facing him, he was disheartened that he did not recognize any of them. He could only assume that it was deliberately done.

Trying not to appear discouraged, Nikolean kept a straight face while he drew his weapon when he heard the lord approaching his flank. He held it at chest level, facing downward with his opposite fist pressing against the hilt in salute.

“Lord Brilldessah,” he said confidently as she passed him, heading to the chair.

From the back, Nikolean could see that she was rather tall for a female dark elf, with silky jet-black hair down to her waist and an extravagant charcoal-gray fur cloak that trailed a few feet behind her. Spaulders jutted up like claws from her shoulders toward the ceiling, and she walked with a strong warrior stride. When she reached the slightly inclined dais, she stopped in front of her chair and whipped her cloak around to face Nikolean. He was surprised to see such a dark-blue tone to her skin, assuming she’d be much older, but she didn’t look a day over one hundred—unprecedented for a dark elf lord. However, no one of Nikolean’s tender age had ever risen to commander status before him either. He was never certain if it was due to his father’s prestige or due to his ruthlessness.

Lord Brilldessah stared at him with her bright-violet eyes for a long while before snapping her fingers angrily in the air. A young boy then hurriedly came before her and unbuckled three finger-bone clasps on her cloak, cautiously removing it. Folding the cloak delicately over his arm, he timidly backed away from her in a subservient position, returning to his spot in a back corner. Rolling her eyes annoyed at the boy, she took her place upon the vibrant chair.

“Nikolean Den Faolin,” she finally said with a smirk. “Former Commander of the Duep Nordor Troops.”

“Yes, my lord,” he said, bowing humbly to her.
